Boxing Championship Begins Tomorrow
Female boxers will take part for the first time in the competition.
The 2004 edition of the national boxing championship will kick-off at the Camp de Unité in Yaounde tomorrow. The competition which will run from November 2 to 7, will bring together best boxers from all the ten provinces of the country. For five days, the inhabitants of Yaounde and its environs will have another opportunity to discover new techniques in the noble art.
This year’s competition promises to be tough as each province is determined to have its name registered in the book of fame. At press time yesterday, eight out of ten provinces had already confirmed their participation at this year’s edition. The South West and the Far North provinces are yet to confirm their participation.
Officials of the Cameroon Boxing Federation (FECABOXE) are living no stone unturned to ensure a hitch-free competition. Even though boxing did not fetch any medals at the Athens Olympic Games for Cameroon, the boxing federation is determined to end its season in grand style. At the level of the provinces, preparations had been going on since the end of the last championship. Only the best from each of the provinces have been selected for the competition.
The various delegations arrived the nation’s capital on Monday while the competition proper will begin tomorrow at 5:00pm. The main innovation at this year’s championship will be the participation of female boxers in the competition. For the first time, the female championship which is already practiced at the level of the provinces will be part of the competition. The female boxers will come from the Littoral, Centre, South West and North West provinces. It will equally be an opportunity for the officials of the boxing federation to select female boxers for the national team. Also in this year’s championship, former champions will be in the ring to defend their titles. These are the champions of the West, Littoral and Centre provinces.
According to Nwaha Boniface, Secretary General of FECABOXE, the best boxers at the competition will be selected to represent Cameroon in the King’s Cup in Morocco in December. The Cup of Cameroon for boxing has been scheduled to take place in Douala in the days ahead.
