English premier league match reports
LONDON,
Following are brief match reports of English premier league games played this weekend:
Played on Sunday:
BLACKBURN ROVERS 1 LEEDS UNITED 2
Mark Viduka could have had a first-half hat-trick but it was his Australia team mate Harry Kewell who put Leeds in front after 55 minutes. Kewell converted a Gary Kelly cross for Leeds`s second seven minutes later but Blackburn, who had earlier hit the woodwork through Tugay Kerimoglu, switched tactics and pulled a late goal back through Henning Berg.
----
SUNDERLAND 0 CHELSEA 0
Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips might have had a hat-trick in the second-half of an ill-tempered encounter. First he saw his penalty saved by Carlo Cudicini after Kevin Kilbane went down in the area. Chelsea`s Italian goalkeeper then kept out a point-blank Phillips header with his legs and Phillips sent a third header just wide seconds later. Chelsea had a goal disallowed for pushing but otherwise seldom threatened.
----
IPSWICH TOWN 0 NEWCASTLE UNITED 1
Peruvian Nolberto Solano converted a 20th-minute rebound to give Newcastle three important points at Portman Road. There was further cheer for Bobby Robson`s team as Kieron Dyer, out for nine months with shin trouble, made a late appearance as a substitute. Ipswich, knocked out of the UEFA Cup on Thursday, have been cut somewhat adrift at the bottom having won only once in the league all season.
----
ARSENAL 3 ASTON VILLA 2
Irrepressible Arsenal produced a wonderful comeback to deny Villa in a Highbury thriller. Route one paid off for as Dion Dublin flicked on a goal kick and former Arsenal player Paul Merson delicately lobbed Villa in front after 21 minutes. Thirteen minutes later Steve Stone made it 2-0 after more hesitancy in the Arsenal defence. Substitute Sylvain Wiltord lashed in Arsenal`s first a minute after the break with his first touch, before Thierry Henry`s calm finish made it 2-2. Frenchman Henry rolled in the coup de grace after sloppy Villa defending deep in stoppage time.

Played on Saturday:
CHARLTON ATHLETIC 3 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1
A dreadful error by Dean Richards allowed Graham Stuart to put Charlton in front after only four minutes and Kevin Lisbie, who scored the winner at Chelsea in midweek, made it 2-0 15 minutes later. Spurs fought back after the break but Lisbie added his second against the run of play before Gustavo Poyet volleyed one back for Spurs.
----
DERBY COUNTY 1 BOLTON WANDERERS 0
England Under-21 striker Malcolm Christie ended his barren run with the only goal of the game at Pride Park after 66 minutes, converting Benito Carbone`s cross. The victory was doubly sweet for their manager Colin Todd, the former Bolton boss, and Derby are now four points clear of table-proppers Ipswich Town.
----
FULHAM 2 EVERTON 0
Everton conceded their first goal in four games when Barry Hayles headed Fulham in front after 36 poor minutes at Craven Cottage. The same player tapped in the home side`s second just after the break but the win was overshadowed by a mass brawl in the second-half which finished with David Weir of Everton and Luis Boa Morte being sent off.
----
LEICESTER CITY 0 SOUTHAMPTON 4
Shades of Leicester`s 5-0 home defeat by Bolton on the opening day of the season as Swede Anders Svensson scored twice in a deserved victory for Southampton. The lively James Beattie and Latvian Marian Pahars, perhaps spurred on by the presence of new striker Brett Ormerod on the bench, scored the visitors` other goals as Southampton jumped out of the drop zone and dumped Leicester in it.
---
LIVERPOOL 2 MIDDLESBROUGH 0
Michael Owen struck a majestic 25-metre drive with the outside of his boot to give Liverpool the lead after 27 minutes -- his 15th goal of the season. By then Middlesbrough had lost goalkeeper Mark Crossley through injury and Patrik Berger whistled an equally fierce effort past his replacement Marlon Beresford to make it 2-0 on the stroke of halftime. Alen Boksic threatened for `Boro but otherwise the visitors had little to offer in reply. Liverpool are unbeaten in 10 league games.
----
MANCHESTER UNITED 0 WEST HAM UNITED 1
England goalkeeper David James saved well from Paul Scholes (twice) and Nicky Butt in the first half. But West Ham had plenty of possession as United manager Alex Ferguson chose to leave David Beckham on the bench and Juan Veron and Ruud van Nistelrooy out of the squad altogether. The signs were not good and West Ham delivered the killer blow after 64 minutes when Paolo Di Canio crossed to the far post for 19-year-old Jermain Defoe to head in the winner. It was West Ham`s first triumph over United in the premier league since its inception in 1992.
