Makoun move unlikely
Midfielder Jean II Makoun, long rumoured to be a target for Manchester United and Arsenal, is close to agreeing a new contract with Lille.
According to L`Equipe, the Cameroon international will meet club officials next week to discuss a one-year extension to his current deal.
United have had an eye on the defensive midfielder ever since Roy Keane left the club, but the signing of Michael Carrick last summer cooled the Reds` interest, while a get-out clause in his contract of around &euro20 million appeared to put Arsenal off.
French champions Lyon were also thought to be tracking the 23-year-old, but with doubts hanging over the future of coach Gerard Houllier at the Stade Gerland, a deal seems unlikely.
After a relatively successful campaign - a spot in the last sixteen of the Champions League and the majority of the season spent occupying the higher places in Ligue 1 - les Nordistes` form tailed off in the latter stages of the season and should he stay as expected, Makoun faces the prospect of a season without European football.
