President orders construction of new omnisport stadium in Yaounde
Cameroon’s president, Paul Biya, Thursday authorised the contracting of a 5 bn dollar loan from the Chinese government to construct a modern multi-sports stadium in the capital, Yaounde.
A presidential decree signed Thursday authorised the minister of public investments and territorial development to finalise the loan accord with the Chinese, who are equally expected to build the new stadium.
No deadline was given as to when the accord should be signed or when the project effectively kicks off.
When constructed, the stadium will bring to two the number of stadiums in Cameroon’s capital.
The present omnisport stadium, said to be in advanced state of dilapidation was equally constructed by the Chinese in 1972 when the country hosted the African Cup of Nations.
Though a great sports, especially footballing nation, Cameroon today owns no single sports infrastructure of international standard. That is why it can not vy to host the African Cup of Nations again despite winning it three times during the past two decades.
