Athletics Championship: Sergine Kouanga Confirms Supremacy
She came first again in the 100m and 200m races on the third day of the Championship yesterday.
Sergine Kouanga has again confirmed her reputation as the fastest woman in Cameroon. After coming first on the first and second day of the athletics championship that took place in Bamenda and Douala respectively, she again came first in the 100m and 200m races during the third day of competition on May 12 and 13 in Yaounde. Ngono Etoundi also broke the national record in the 5000m race. There was a marked improvement in the male category of the 5000m race as the first athlete covered the distance in less than four minutes for the first time in more than five years.
It was an Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium under construction that hosted the competition and this had an adverse effect on the smooth organisation of the Games. Athletes for discus and javelin could not use the green top of the field which has been excavated. There were also intermittent power failures, causing organisers to hire a generator. According to technicians in charge of measuring the performances of athletes, the fluctuations in power supply by the generator, hampers the good functioning of the electric chronometer.
The third day of the athletics national championship was also a baptism of fire for the newly elected president of the Centre provincial league of athletics, Mbafu Clifford, who is the main organiser of the competition. With the dust now settled over the wrangling following his ascension to power, Mbafu Clifford has now settled to work. "It has been a wonderful experience. It is like people were waiting for the change. The number of athletes and clubs taking part in the competition has increased, and people hung around to watch the competition despite rainfall and the absence of electricity. His objective for now is to qualify as many athletes as possible for the African Games coming up in July. Another positive sign was the presence of the Cameroon’s Olympic gold medallist, Françoise Mbango, encouraging younger athletes.
The president of the Cameroon Athletics Federation thanked the minister of Sports and Physical Education, Augustin Edjoa, for giving the federation the permission to use the stadium despite the work going on and also congratulated the Centre Provincial league of athletics for the good organisation of the competition. He announced the coming of American athletes to compete with Cameroonian athletes during the 4th and last day of the championship to take place in Bafoussam. The coming of the Americans is the fruit of a partnership that was struck, thanks to Rev Victor Manym.
