Meticulous Road Map
Eldickson AGBORTOGO
Proper execution and meritocracy should be top on the agenda.
With barely sixty days to the kick-off of the world football tournament, the technical squad of the Indomitable Lions is doing everything to make sure the Lions put on an honourable show in South Africa. To set the ball rolling, head coach Paul Le Guen, has since the early exit of the Indomitable Lions at the 2010 African Nations Cup in Angola, criss-crossed the globe in search for new talents and put in place a route map.
To give each and every Cameroonian a chance, the French man has decided to kick start his preparatory programme, by calling to camp twenty-four African based players. Twenty-two from the Cameroon MTN Elite One Championship and two, Francis Ambane, striker from Entente Setif of Algeria and Alfred Mfongang, who plays for DR Congo`s AS Vita Club.
The twenty-four players were selected following a recent scouting mission around the country by Paul Le Guen’s assistant, Yves Colleu. It is not the first time a Cameroonian trainer is seeking the services of local players at the eve of a world cup. In 1994, French coach Henry Michel, selected locally based players, Song Bahanag and Mark Vivian Foe from Tonnerre and Canon respectively. In 1998, another French trainer spotted, Cyril Ndo and Ndjanka Biaka, while plying their trade in Olympic of Mvolye. The Yaounde five days training camp which begins this morning is expected to end on April 16, 2010.
However, beyond, the country’s border, a series of warm-up encounters have been fixed against fellow World Cup qualifiers. The first will be against Slovakia on the 29th of May in Klagenfurt, on the 1st of June they will take on Portugal in Lisbon and finalise their preparation against Serbia on the 5th of June.
It should be noted that the sparring partners were chosen because their style of play is similar to that of the Indomitable Lions World Cup group opponents. The Indomitable Lions have been drawn in Group E alongside Netherlands, Denmark and Japan for the 2010 World Cup.
