Cameroon face Egypt on 8 October
Martin Etonge
World football governing body, FIFA has decided that the two Group 3 World Cup qualifiers – Sudan versus Ivory Coast and Cameroon versus Egypt will be played on same day.
The Cameroon versus Egypt qualifier in Yaounde was originally planned for Sunday 9 October, but has now been brought back by 24 hours in order to coincide with the Sudan versus Ivory Coast game on Saturday 8 October.
However, the game in Omdurman Sudan will commence at 16.00 Gmt, an hour later than the Cameroon versus Egypt match in Yaounde. This schedule is against the tradition of the Indomitable Lions who regularly play at home on Sundays.
The FIFA decision is based on the fact that both Cameroon and Ivory Coast need a victory to finish top of the group and win a place for the 2006 World Cup finals.
Having the games at different dates could be beneficial to Cameroon who would have known the result of their Ivorian rivals before taking on Egypt. Cameroon top group 3 with 20 points, just one point ahead of Ivory Coast.
The four match referees are Malians led by Coulibaly Koman, while the Referee Inspector is Mr Mounguengui Pierre Alain from Gabon and the match commissioner is Mr Sylvestre Mbongo from the Republic of Congo.
