Nigeria`s Jay Jay Okocha Signs For Bolton
The Nigerian playmaker, Augustin Jay Jay Okocha is fully settled in the English premiership after striking a post world cup deal with division one club, Bolton Wanderers. Negotiations over the deal had been protracted and it was believed that Okocha`s demand for the season wage of 3.3 million pounds (some 330 million CFA francs) would have shattered Wanderers` hope of hiring his services. But the thousand smiles of Wanderers` trainer, Sam Allardyce finally lulled the skipper into signing for an amount not yet made public. After concluding the 2-year-contract, Allardyce makes some pertinent remarks. In his own words, "Jay Jay has a great pedigree. He has a flair, ability and huge experience." The trainer stresses on the fact that their ambition is to bring the best quality players into Bolton Wanderers and to be in a progressive mood.
The 28-year-old Nigerian midfielder has played for Germany`s Frankfurt and Eintracht before his 10 million pounds (100 million CFA francs) deal that moved him into Paris Saint Germain. It is all over with PSG as Okocha finds solace in Bolton Wanderers. Meanwhile, before Nigeria-England encounter in the just ended world cup competition in Japan and South Korea, Okocha who captained the Super Eagles in the foiled Far East expedition made known his intention to drop his national team for professional football abroad. His "retirement" as he puts it, from the Super Eagles stirred mixed feelings among team mates and management with plea from friends to reconsider the decision. In an interview granted BBC, Okocha sounds conciliatory but is not categoric on the decision to come back to the national squad. The star player blames the poor performance of Nigeria in recent outings especially the world cup on the lack of experience within the players he describes as young. Okocha so far remains the highest ever paid Nigerian player after his 10 million pounds deal.
