Angola lose midfielder Gilberto
Angola midfielder Gilberto has been ruled out of the African Cup of Nations in Egypt with an Achilles injury.
Officials from the Palancas Negras said he had been flown to Germany on Wednesday evening for an operation.
The tendon injury also threatens to jeopardise his chances of playing at the World Cup finals in Germany later this year.
"But we hope he won`t be out that long," Angola coach Luis Oliveira Goncalves said.
Gilberto was injured during training in Morocco earlier this week, where Angola played out a 2-2 draw with the Atlas Lions in Tuesday`s friendly in Rabat.
The left-sided midfielder was a regular for Angola in their successful World Cup qualifying campaign and also won last year`s African Champions League with Egyptian club Ahly.
Angola have already lost reserve goalkeeper Lama, who was injured in training in Marbella, Spain, last week.
Former youth international Angelo has been called up to replace Lama and Oliveira Goncalves said Gilberto`s replacement was likely to be Brazil-based striker Johnson Macaba.
Angola play their first match in Group B against Cameroon in Cairo on Saturday and then face the DR Congo and Togo.
