     Cameroon to repair their pride

    news24.com

Cairo - If two years ago someone had said that Angola would be going to the World Cup finals and not Cameroon they might well have been sent to see a doctor.

However that has turned out to be the case as Angola achieved a fairytale qualification while Cameroon saw their almost divine right to be at a World Cup finals ended with the Ivory Coast topping their group.

Here on Saturday, however, the Indomitable Lions will start out on their quest to win a record fifth African Nations Cup title as they take on Angola in their Group B clash.

Ordinarily one would declare it a no contest with Cameroon stacked with players that ply their trade with European clubs while Angola can really boast of just one player with a top class club, Pedro Mantorras of Benfica.

However unlike Cameroon they do not have any problems with egos clashing and it is their team spirit that is their greatest strength as was the case when they saw off the challenge of another of the aristocrats of African football, Nigeria, to clinch their place in Germany this summer.

"We can do well in Egypt provided the positive, all for one attitude of the squad during the qualifying rounds is maintained," said their skipper Fabrice `Akwa` Maeico.

    Secret

"The secret of our success is getting together and solving our problems."

Cameroon, for their part, will look to star striker Samuel Eto`o to score the goals, though he will have to cope with a goalkeeper intriguingly called Goliath, and for veteran Rigobert Song to keep the defence steady.

Eto`o for one is determined to triumph here.

"We have to conquer Africa," said the Barcelona hitman.

However it is in midfield that they might be found wanting with Eric Djemba-Djemba failing to impress at Aston Villa, just as he did at Manchester United, and Samuel Olembe equally struggling.

Their best hope for midfield solidity would be for coach Artur Jorge to pick Jean II Makoun, whose performances for Lille this term have been outstanding.

    Not simple

As usual, though, with Cameroon nothing is simple in terms of their preparation as Jorge was reported to have been on the verge of resigning because he had not been paid for months and there was criticism for not picking Samuel Wome, whose missed penalty cost Cameroon their place in Germany.

However such was the bitterness of words between Wome and Eto`o, Jorge would had to have been a master diplomat to take them both along.

Apparently Jorge`s cash problem has been resolved and the Portuguese former national side and Swiss handler - who delivered French giants PSG their last domestic championship in 1994 - can focus on restoring some of the pride to the Indomitable Lions.

Defeat for Angola would not be the end of the road as regards progressing to the last eight because, with fellow World Cup finals debutants Togo and the unpredictable Democratic Republic of Congo the others in the group, it looks as if second place is wide open.
