     Milla slams Cameroon club bosses

By Ignace Mizuh and Martin Etonge

Legend Roger Milla has blamed the presidents of Cameroon`s league clubs for the exodus of players seeking fame and fortune outside the country.

Criticising the club bosses for paying little attention to the welfare of the players, Milla linked their departure to the declining standards in the domestic league.

"If the club presidents do not care for the players, they won`t play good football and our stadiums will continue to remain empty.

"It`s because these players are miserable that the level of their football is poor and we haven`t got a single locally-based player in the national team.

"Unless club presidents are ready to treat players with respect, by paying them regular and good salaries, our young talents will always be thinking of going abroad for greener pastures.

"We must stop the poor management of our clubs and players, which is killing our football," Milla said.

With 700 players said to be based abroad, Fecafoot secretary general Atangana Mballa admits that the trend is not in the interest of the Cameroonian game.

"Out of the 700 players listed by the federation, only 70 were issued official international transfer certificates as the rules demand," he said.

"Many of these players are encouraged by their families, who use all sorts of ways to get them abroad.

"Some falsify documents to show they are going on holidays or leaving to continue their education, in order to obtain visas to enter the country of their choice.

"When they get there, the players start writing to Fecafoot, demanding letters to confirm that they played in Cameroon.

"These are good players who could be exhibiting their talent in Cameroon.

"Sadly, they are now lost in the wild, serving neither Cameroon nor their families."

Atangana believes club presidents should play a bigger role in educating footballers on how to pursue their ambitions in a way that would not damage their careers.

But with no end in sight to the poor conditions for players in the league, the flight of players to more prosperous shores is unlikely to abate.
