Interpools 2004 : Who is Who ?
Initially scheduled to start this weekend, the 2004 round robin tournament, popularly referred to as the Interpools, will begin next Tuesday. The event will take place simultaneously in Yaounde and Douala. From all indications, all is virtually set for the competition. The provincial representatives have already been known. As was the case last year, ten teams will take part in this year’s tournament; that is, one per province. The provincial champions have already been divided into two pools. Pool A teams, that will play in Yaounde, include: Sahel Maroua, AS Kadey Batouri, Astres Douala, Yong Stars Academy Bamenda and Etoile Filante Garoua. Teams of Group B — Foudre Akonolinga, Elecsport Limbe, Girondins Ngaoundere, ASMY Ebolowa and Aigle Menoua - on the other hand, will play in Douala.
But, where do these teams come from and what are their ambitions? Three teams will be making their debut at the Interpools: AS Kadey, Astres Douala and Yong Star Academy Bamenda. Ironically, they have all been drawn into Pool A and will be battling it out for the two available Division I tickets in the pool with Interpool regulars such as Sahel Maroua. They will also have to face, Etoile Filante Garoua, a former team of the elite league whose lone objective is to regain its past glories. Pool B, on the other hand, is made up of teams that are familiar with the Interpools competition, some of which have tested the glory that comes with being in Division I.
In effect, the Interpools remain a stage for budding footballers. It can be considered the breeding ground of the stars of tomorrow; their window into a bigger football world and the key to glory. A player in the Divison I league is not only more exposed to the outside world, but can dream of being selected for the national team. Tignyemb and Abada Fish, who defended Caiman of Douala and Etoile d’Essazok respectively at the Interpools 2002, were selected for the junior national football team because of their performance at the Interpool tournament. The examples are many.
In the same light, clubs stand to benefit a lot if promoted into Division I league. A place in the elite football league can be compared to a seat in the meeting of elders; it is tantamount to a change in image and an increase in status. They can start eyeing national and international trophies and the huge financial gains that come with them.
It is for such reasons that the round robin tournament remains one of the greatest sports events in the country. The mobilisation of supporters and elite nation-wide since the teams qualified clearly testifies this. Each province is uniting its forces to make sure the players exhibit their talents in complete serenity. They are ensuring that all their dues are paid in time. In the same light, the mobile telephone company, MTN, the official sponsor of football in the country, has dished out over CFA 60 million for this year’s competition. Each of the ten clubs was recently paid CFA four million and will be given two sets of jerseys, all valued at CFA 10 million. It will be compulsory for all clubs to wear the jerseys offered by MTN because MTN retains exclusive rights over the Interpools.
And since it has been proven that money ignites talents and enhances performance, there will be feast for the eyes in Yaounde and Douala as from Tuesday. All players have promised to give their best. The wish of all is that in the spirit of fair play, only the best four teams be promoted to Division I.
