Grateful Geremi bounces back
NEWCASTLE United midfielder Geremi has thanked the Toon Army for standing by him during difficult times this season.
United will head to Portsmouth on Saturday on a real high, with Geremi looking forward to extending the side’s recent good run.
But the Cameroon international has had a rollercoaster season which at one stage saw him out in the cold and stripped of the captaincy under Sam Allardyce.
However, the departure of Big Sam and the arrival of Kevin Keegan resulted in him fighting back to regain his place, with the player also making a massive contribution in the last few games.
Indeed the four-game unbeaten run that has put Newcastle clear of relegation has coincided with the African’s return, and the fact the Geremi has played in all 10 of United’s victories this term is an outstanding statistic.
Geremi told the Chronicle: “I wanted to show the Newcastle fans I wanted to do well.
“As a footballer you want to play and be professional and do your job.
“And you have to give a lot of credit to the Newcastle fans because they keep on coming to see you.
“The bad thing is when they turn up and you don’t perform well.

“That’s a big disappointment, so you want to play very well to make them happy.
“They come to watch you and pay a lot of money so you have to work hard for them.
“The best thing is when you play well and people enjoy it.’’
Former Chelsea and Real Madrid star Geremi is now looking forward to a bright future under Kevin Keegan, with the manager delighted with his performances.
However, Geremi says that he had to work hard and show the right application to grab the Toon gaffer’s attention in training after returning from the African Cup of Nations in January.
He said: “It’s important to show a new manager what you can do. You need to impress him and you need to gain his confidence.
“And you have to win your place in the starting XI. When I returned from Ghana he didn’t play me straight away. He needed to see what my quality was like, but I think he knows me better now.’’
