Professional Footballers Thrill Yaounde Public
They have been organising friendly matches across the capital.
The Christmas break observed by most clubs in Europe has been a blessing to the inhabitants of the capital city who have been able to commune with players they saw only on television. Most players of Cameroonian origin are spending their holidays at home and using friendly matches to keep fit. Barely a week after some young professional players organised a match at the Biyem-Assi stadium in Yaounde to sensitise the public against AIDS, some professional players based in France, played a friendly against a selection of home based players at the Nlongkak playground in Yaounde on New Year day. The surprise guest star at the event was Samuel Eto’o Fils who was present but didn’t play. Just as the enigmatic captain of the Indomitable Lions, Rigobert Song, who didn’t play as well. Jean Makoun played for the selection of France-based players.
Others decide to play with their friends and clubs they used to play with before becoming professionals. Prominent among them is Cameroon’s ace defender Pierre Wome Nlend who seems to have come back to better sentiments after the debacle to qualify for the World Cup. The Werder of Bremen player in the Bundesliga was seen training with his former club, Canon Yaounde at the club’s training ground in Nkolndongo-Yaounde. The next day he was at the military stadium in Yaounde playing with friends of the Deux Zero club clad in jerseys offered by the professional player. Wome could be seen at the end of the match chatting happily with friends and chiding journalists for not having supported him when he was not selected for the African Cup of Nation expedition in Egypt. The return of Wome is seen as a gradual step towards his reintegration of the national football team to which he turned his back ever since he lost the penalty that would have qualified Cameroon for the World Cup in Germany. The willingness of the national team coach, Arie Haan, to have him back on the squad coupled with the letter of encouragement sent to him by the new Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Augustin Thierry Edjoa and his present home coming, could make him reconsider his decision.
