Mboma Shines in Japan
He was crowned man-of-the-match after leading East Japan to a 3-1 victory over the West during the annual J.League All-Star game last Saturday.
Cameroon’s top striker, Patrick Mboma, is once more creating sensation in "the land of the rising sun". The Lion, who is playing for Tokyo Verdy 1969 (a J 1 league team in Japan) this year, last Saturday led East Japan to victory over the West during the annual J.League All-Star game at the Sapporo Dome stadium on the island of Hokkaido. The annual JOMO All-Star game marks the midway point in the J League season and brings together fan-selected players from the J1 League teams. The players are divided into the J-East and J-West squads.
Mboma’s goal came in during the first half of the game, just five minutes after the curtain raiser by Kashima Antlers midfielder Koji Nakata. A header in the 65th minute from Verdy midfielder, Takuya Yamada, brought the scores to three for East Japan. The lone goal of the West came in six minutes to the end of the encounter. Mboma was crowned man-of-the-match. The title came with a cheque of one million yen (about CFA 5 million).
The performance of Patrick Mboma, who is fondly referred to in Japan as "Black Panther", was not surprising to many Japanese. In effect, Mboma first burst onto the scene in 1997, when he lit up the Japanese league while playing for Gamba Osaka. That year, he finished top scorer in his first season with 25 goals in 28 matches. and scored the fastest J League goal (26 seconds).
Last Saturday’s brilliant performance greatly comforted fans of the international striker, 2000 African Player of the Year, who had started putting to question the vitality of the Lion after his absence at the Confederation Cup in France.
