Italy: Never Three Without Four
The Sqadra Azzurri is now in position to become the second national team to win four World Cup trophies.
Many people had believed Italy, sweating under the heat of domestic corruption, could not go far in the World Cup. 13 of the 23 players presently defending Italy in Germany play for the four top clubs which are under investigation. Rather, like in 1982, the corruption scandal has not demoralised the players. The pressure has made Coach Marcello Lippi and his boys more united and determined to fight to the end. On Sunday in Berlin, therefore, it is a confident Italian side that will be facing France for their fourth world football championship title, after winning in 1934, 1938 and 1982.
By defeating hosts Germany, Italy reached their sixth World Cup final. The Italians are now in position to become the second nation to win four World Cup trophies after Brazil. Italy have now kept five clean sheets and have conceded only one goal (an own goal by Cristian Zaccardo) in the tournament.
The journey to the final has been pretty smooth for the Italians. The Azzurri started their world cup campaign on June 12 against Ghana. They beat the African newcomers 2 — 0, drew 1 — 1 in the second group match against the USA, before finishing the group stage in grand style with a 2 — 0 win over Czech Republic. They overcame Australia 1 — 0 in the round of 16 before knocking out Ukraine 3 — 0 in the quarter final. Their semi final encounter was the most dramatic. Italy stunned Germany with two goals in the final minutes of extra time to reach its first final since losing to Brazil in 1994.
Coach Marcello Lippi is confident. "The players have grown as the tournament has progressed, both mentally and physically. This is a superb squad. We have an incredible team spirit and that can give you a decisive edge at this level. It can often prove to be the difference between two highly technically-gifted sides that are evenly-matched in every other area", he told reporters yesterday. Proof of this is the fact that ten different players have scored for Italy in Germany with Toni being the only one to find the net twice. Lippi thinks this diversity is the hallmark of his side. "I’ve always preferred not to overly depend on certain individuals. I’m confident that the same rule will apply in Berlin", he concludes.
