FECAFOOT Affair : Investigations End
The commission to investigate the management of financial and material resources accruing from sponsorship by the FECAFOOT ended work yesterday.
The commission created last May 19, by the Minister of Youth and Sports, to probe into the management of financial and material resources accruing from sponsorship by the Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT, ended work yesterday evening. A member of the commission contacted yesterday afternoon at the commission’s working base in Yaounde, said it was their last day at work. If we have to go by his words, then the document which Ngack Mahop Christophe and co have been working on for the past seven weeks is presently on the table of the Minister of Youth and Sports. It was expected to have been deposited unofficially yesterday evening at 6:00pm.
This notwithstanding, sources at the Ministry of Youth and Sports say the two commissions created by the Minister of Youth and Sports following instructions from the Presidency of the Republic (text revision and investigation of FECAFOOT) are expected to officially hand over the results of their findings tomorrow to the Minister of Youth and Sports. This will put an end to worries already arising from the elasticity of the life span of the FECAFOOT inquiry commission that was initially expected to last 30 days.
In effect, the circumstances under which the commission to investigate FECAFOOT was created gives enough reason for Cameroonians to look forward to the results of the inquiry with much anxiety. It came after the cabinet reshuffle of last April 23 that was accompanied by a communiqué of the Minister of State, Secretary General at the Presidency. The release stated that the President Paul Biya, had "prescribed the sending of a commission of inquiry to FECAFOOT and a quick review of the statutes of that body".
On May 7th, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Siegfried David Etame Massoma, started implementing the instructions as he created a commission to review the statutes of the FECAFOOT. Two weeks after, another commission was created to probe into the management of financial and material resources accruing from sponsorship, by the Cameroon Football Federation. The commission headed by Ngack Mahop Christophe had as mission to enumerate and control the regularity of the management of the material and financial fall-outs from the participation of the national team in international competitions, sponsoring by PUMA, ORANGE, PMUC and SABC and the retransmission rights by Sport Five. The six-man commission also had to find out how gains from friendly encounters and publicity in stadiums are managed, as well as examine the technical issues binding the FECAFOOT to the World Football governing body, FIFA and the Confederations of African Football, CAF.
Members of this commission, have since their installation, been working round the clock to come out with a report which will establish responsibilities and make concrete proposals to the Minister of Youth and Sports with regards to FECAFOOT management. During the past seven weeks therefore, several persons involved in the day to day management of FECAFOOT were interviewed and documents consulted.
