Roger Milla Visits AIDS Patients
As Goodwill Ambassador for UNAIDS in Africa, he was at the Yaounde Day Hospital to encourage patients.
The Cameroon’s roving Ambassador, H.E. Roger Milla in his capacity as the Ambassador of UNAIDS in Africa, yesterday visited the Day Hospital in Yaounde. During the visit he appreciated the manner in which the hospital functions and the various activities carried out to curb the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
While welcoming Mr. Roger Milla, the Director of the Yaounde Central Hospital, Professor Biwole Magloire Sida lauded the ambassador for honouring their invitation and hoped that his visit and assistance will inspire and encourage other donors. Ambassador Roger Milla said that his visit is aimed at sensitising and encouraging assistance to people living with AIDS. He noted that assistance must not only come from the government but should also come from individual donors.
The service head of the Day Hospital, Dr Kouanfack Charles took the august guest through the wards. The hospital undertakes the following activities: HIV testing, psycho-social counselling, clinical and therapeutic care. It also coordinates the activities of the therapeutic committee of the approved treatment centre at the Yaounde Central Hospital.
The Ambassador visited the various units of the hospital: infectious diseases, the approved treatment centre, cancer unit, laboratories, wards, medical, mobile unit and the pharmacy. While the medical unit covers related illnesses and all other pathological cases not associated to HIV, the mobile unit fights against AIDS and suffering. It also identifies those infected and provides them with HIV/AIDS information, care, support and psycho-social counselling.
The Goodwill Ambassador of UNAIDS in Africa later signed the visitor’s register of the hospital and proceeded to the Association for Emergency Assistance to Patients and Support Staff of the Day Hospital.
The Day Hospital which operates only during the day covers all aspects of the fight against HIV/AIDS. The uniqueness of the hospital is its concept of de-stigmatisation. It caters for about 9,000 HIV patients. 38 per cent of its patients are eligible for treatment but unable to purchase the anti-retroviral drugs. Thus, the need for national and international solidarity.
