Benfica winning race for Djemba-Djemba
The 26-year-old midfielder, who became a hit with the Burnley faithful and manager Steve Cotterill alike after he arrived on loan in January until the end of last season, had revealed his preference would be to continue to play in England rather than abroad.
Discussions were held between Cotterill and Villa boss Martin O`Neill at the end of last term about a possible season-long loan deal for the Cameroon international. But with the Premiership side looking to offload Djemba-Djemba on a permanent basis and cash-in on the player who cost them £1.5million, interest has spread to the continent, with Portuguese outfit Benfica the front-runners to capture the former Manchester United midfielder`s signature for a fee in the region of £700,000.
Djemba-Djemba turned down an opportunity to join Lille on loan in favour of Burnley last season and said, while he would prefer to stay in English football`s top flight, he would not rule out a return to Turf Moor in an effort to achieve the first team football he was starved of at Villa Park last season.
Before joining the Clarets he had only made one appearance for Villa as a last-minute substitute against Arsenal on the opening day of the season at the Emirates Stadium.
And he thanked Burnley, and in particular boss Cotterill, for reviving his season.
"I`ve enjoyed my football," Djemba-Djemba said at the time.
"Every player needs to play, and to be a good player and to be a fit player you need to play regular football.
"It was very frustrating for me not to play many games at Aston Villa but now I`ve had a chance to play and I`m very happy with that.
"I am very thankful to Steve Cotterill and Burnley for giving me the opportunity. I can`t forget that."
Djemba-Djemba is aware he is not part of boss O`Neill`s plans and looked set to be pushed even further down Villa`s pecking order with the anticipated arrival of midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker from West Ham. However, that deal could fall through with Villa only prepared to spend £8 million on the England under 21 captain and the Hammers wanting more.
While Djemba-Djemba remains contracted to Villa, Burnley are unlikely to give up hope, although even if a loan deal can be agreed, fulfilling the former Nantes star`s Premiership wages could provide another stumbling block.
