Spanish clubs cry foul over Eto`o
Barcelona`s decision to delay the departure of Samuel Eto`o for the African Nations Cup has angered some of their Spanish league rivals who have had to release their Africans stars early.
Barcelona have been given permission by Cameroon to delay the release of Eto`o while Osasuna were not been given the same privilege for Pierre Webo, claimed Osasuna coach Javier Aguire.
"It seems unjust but I have never been one to complain," said the Mexican coach who added that that Barcelona had received "preferential treatment" from the Cameroon Football Federation.
Aguire fumed: "I don`t want to get involved with other national teams but it doesn`t seem fair to give special permission to Eto`o.
"I knew Webo would have to leave now so no one has misled me but I don`t think it is right given what has happened elsewhere."
Espanyol, who had to release goalkepeer Carlos Kameni, noted that the rules "oblige us to accept" the situation and added that the club "does not want to harm the player."
A club spokesman said: "We can negotiate a delay with a federation but if it says no there`s nothing we can do."
Eto`o will face Athletic Bilbao in the Nou Camp on 15 January and then link up with his international team-mates the following day.
Aguire said he had nothing against Eto`o but "it was clear he had more influence" with Cameroon than Webo.
"Eto`o is a friend of mine, I like him a lot and he`s a marvellous lad. He deserves all the privileges he gets because of the sort of player he is," said Aguirre.
"I asked Webo if he could get permission to stay a few days longer but he doesn`t carry the same weight.
"We are going to try and talk with the Cameroon coach again but I don`t have much influence either, I`m just a sad Mexican coach," he added.
