Foe’s death: Doctors accused of laxity
By Martin Etonge in Yaounde
The tragic and sudden death of Cameroon’s talented international midfielder, Marc Vivien Foe has raised serious questions about the medical test taken by professional footballers at the request of their clubs.
Foe collapsed unchallenged at the 72rd minute of the Confederations Cup semi-final game between Cameroon and Colombia in Lyon, France, and died 45 minutes later of heart failure.
Post-mortem tests revealed that the size of Foe’s heart 16mm by 5mm was more than normal. According to a report in the French sports magazine L’Equipe the thickness of Foe’s heart was between 12-13mm when he was to be recruited by Olympiques Lyonais in 2000 and 2003 the growth went up by 3mm. So where were the doctors during subsequent tests, especially in Manchester City?
Bruno Carn, cardiologist who followed up Nwankwo Kanu’s heart problems in Inter Milan told L’Euipe: “Apart fromn Italy, France and Spain any thing can happen to a player. There does not exist preventive tests for footballers. When Kanu came from Ajax, he had not done any medical in the Netherlands.
“I diagnosed a serious cardiac insufficiency which led to an operation. I’m sure that if the player went but to Arsenal, he would not have had this check”.
Therefore, if Foe like any other professional had had preventive checks, the dramatic death would have been avoided, though the abnormal heart growth, which is genetic could still cause sudden death to anybody.
To prove that checks on footballers are not serious, Cameroon’s German doctor, Heinz Walter Lobr told L’Equipe that many months ago he had requested that he does an up-to-date medical check of the players as they prepared for next year’s African Nations Cup.
“Except during camping, I have no direct contact with the players. Consequently, I had requested that I do medical tests on the players we do in Germany twice a year”.
But caught up by time, the Indomitable Lions could not take the tests before the Confederations Cup.
“Before the competition (Confederations Cup) we simply did the routine blood tests”, confessed Olivier Assamba, Cameroon’s team doctor.
Certainly, if the club and national team doctors had done their job, Foe may have been saved just like Kanu.
