Football: Another Foe Drops Dead
Ivo Akumbo, alias Foe, died on the Buea Survey School campus field.
He is 20 years old and would have been writing the GCE A’Level today. Unfortunately, Ivo Akumbo, alias Foe, would not live to see his dream of going to the University of Buea, "the Place to be", come true. He died last May 31 at about 5 pm during a keep-fit football encounter with his friends in the Buea Survey School campus field.
The most astonishing aspect of the incident is that the Akumbo, who had been nicknamed "Foe", by his friends ended in the same way as his namesake. The Baptist High School GCE External Centre (Buea), where Akumbo had registered marked him absent yesterday morning when the examination began. Family members and friends say he had been preparing intensively for the examination just the way he is said to have prepared at home to obtain his "O" Levels.
As the old adage goes "learning without play makes Jack a dull boy", Akumbo usually went for football in the afternoon after reading hard in the morning. According to Theophilus Bom, his junior brother present at the scene of the incident, "Akumbo fell at about 40 minutes into the game; got up by himself before crumbling finally a few minutes later". He added that the deceased was not known to be ill. The corpse was taken to their Warders Barrack Quarters in Buea before being transferred to the Provincial Hospital Mortuary.
Akumbo was the fifth of eleven children born of David Toh, a senior warder with the Buea Prisons. They hail from Babanki, Mezam in the North West Province. Many sympathisers in Buea have seen in Akumbo’s death the reminiscence of Cameroon’s famous mid-fielder Marc-Vivien Foe who collapsed and died in June 2003 during a Confederations Cup semi-final game against Colombia in Lyon, France.
