Doll sticks by Atouba
Hamburg coach Thomas Doll stood by defender Thimothee Atouba, after he repeatedly stuck his middle finger up at home fans jeering his substitution in the 3-2 victory over CSKA Moscow on Wednesday.
The Cameroon international was hauled off midway through the second half with Hamburg 2-1 down, and the home fans roundly booed him off the pitch, prompting his angry reaction.
“A reaction like that from Thimothee Atouba is inexcusable, and we`ll have to speak about that,” said Doll after the match.
“But it`s not nice and it hurts when you are individually booed from your own fans. It won`t do any good to hang him out to dry. He will continue to play for us.”
Atouba has been unpopular with Hamburg fans ever since he demanded an increase in his salary last summer.
