Eto’o closes on African award hat-trick
CAIRO: Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o edged closer to a third consecutive African Footballer of the Year award when he was named among three finalists on Sunday.
Midfielder Michael Essien of Ghana and striker Didier Drogba of Ivory Coast, teammates at English Premiership leaders Chelsea, also survived when the list of contenders for the 2005 edition was cut from five to three. Barcelona star Eto’o was the best placed African in the European Footballer of the Year poll last month, finishing 10th with Drogba (14th) and Essien (22nd) also among the top 25 in a vote topped by Brazilian ace Ronaldinho. Out of the reckoning for the African award go two France-based players, Monaco striker Emmanuel Adebayor of Togo and Bordeaux midfielder Marouane Chamakh of Morocco. The winner will be named at a ceremony in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, on January 9 with Eto’o set to emulate Abedi ‘Pele’ Ayew of Ghana and George Weah of Liberia by finishing first for three consecutive years.
Selected Confederation of African Football (CAF) officials shortlist candidates for the Footballer of the Year award before national coaches from the 53 member states vote. Finalists in six other categories were named with African club champions Al-Ahly of Egypt poised to complete a hat-trick by winning the African club Footballer of the Year, Coach of the Year and Club of the Year awards. Midfielder-cum-striker Mohamed Barakat was a six-goal pivotal figure in the success of Al-Ahly, who face Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia next Sunday in the FIFA club world championship quarter-finals. The Club of the Year title also appears destined for the headquarters of Al-Ahly in the Egyptian capital while their Portuguese coach, Manuel Jose, faces stiff competition from former Nigeria defensive stalwart Stephen Keshi.
Fired as an asssistant coach after Nigeria lost a 2002 African Nations Cup semi-final, Keshi moved to Togo, took over the national team and sensationally guided the star-less ‘Hawks’ to the World Cup in Germany next year. Togo will challenge fellow World Cup qualifiers Ivory Coast for the National team of the Year award while the Young Footballer of the Year and Female Footballer of the Year titles appear open. The awards were launched in 1970 and organised by Paris-based magazine France Football until 1995 when CAF took control and the ceremony has been broadcast live to Africa for several years.
