     Another Lion-Elephant Duel (03.02.2006)

Within the Cameroon-Côte d’Ivoire match is another derby between two top strikers of the continent.

Eto’o and Drogba are indisputably, Africa`s most ferocious strikers. Both players have demonstrated that scoring goals for their European clubs and national teams is a passion. They are rated almost the same by the public. "Rivalry" between the two stars is therefore rife as both strikers have often been nominated for the same awards. They were the only two African players to be on the 55-man honour shortlist for at the inaugural World XI awards organised by the international players` union, FIFPro. Eto`o however beat Drogba in the final placings. Earlier this year, Drogba narrowly beat Eto`o for the 2005 Golden Lion prize for the best African footballer. Drogba finished just two points ahead of Eto`o in the election conducted by the Moroccan sports newspaper Al Mountakhab. Such examples are many. It is therefore difficult to talk of dominance or supremacy when talking about Cameroon`s Eto`o Fils and Côte

d`Ivoire`s Drogba. However, to many pundits, Drogba has always lived under the shadows of Eto`o. Example. For two consecutive years, Eto`o has been voted African footballer of the year, to the detriment of Drogba.

These two football giants will clash today when their teams meet at the quarter finals of the 25th African Cup of Nations. To many Ivorians here in Cairo, it is an occasion for Drogba to take revenge on Eto`o; prove to his fans that he can strike harder. Meanwhile, Eto`o, as Africa`s best and third in the world, is out to confirm this pre-eminence. The fact that both strikers have been in superlative form since the start of the competition increases the excitement. Will Eto`o continue his goal-scoring spree? Will Drogba make up for the average performance of his team during their last group match against Egypt? It is difficult to say. What is certain is that tomorrow`s match is an epic encounter. And at the end of the day, the winner of the duel will be the one whose national team goes through to the semi finals.
