West Africans Dominate (06.02.2006)
Football is just a game with the outcome uncertain. This dogma was once again proven right over the weekend as the quarter final matches at the ongoing 25th African Cup of Nations unfolded in Egypt. The eight teams in the competition gave their best. Egypt and Senegal picked their semi finals tickets after 90 minutes of play. The Pharaohs crushed the Simbas, 3-1, while Senegal outplayed Guinea 3-2 to reach the group of four.
Nigeria and Cote d`Ivoire staggered into the semis. They edged their adversaries after penalty shoots. In the first semi final match last Saturday, Nigeria had a sweet revenge on Tunisia; the team that stopped them from reaching the finals in the last edition. The Super Eagles won 6-5 on penalties after 1-1 at full time. In the second match last Saturday, Cote d`Ivoire beat the Indomitable Lions, 12-11, following the highest-scoring shoot-out in Nations Cup history. Every player scored their first spot kick. Eto`o missed his second kick while Drogba scored the winning penalty. Both teams had finished 1-1 after prolongation.
The results bring out certain trends; the emergence of West African countries. At least, one team from this region would play the finals next Friday as three West African nations, Nigeria, Senegal and Cote d`Ivoire, have made it to the semis. Both finalists can even be West Africans! But the hosts, Egypt, would be fighting to retain the trophy in the North African region.
The quarter finals results are also an indication that there are no
laid down rules in football. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, for example, had always walked on the Elephants. Cameroon beat Cote d`Ivoire in the home and away matches of the recent 2006 World Cup/African cup of Nations joint eliminatories. They were also the darling team of the competition. Last Saturday`s victory of Cote d`Ivoire can therefore be considered as a change in the wheel of fortune. The same story holds for Nigeria and Tunisia. The Carthage Eagles have always walked on the Super Eagles. During the 2004 edition, for example, Tunisia eliminated Nigeria at the semi finals after penalties.
The results also indicate that a faultless first-round performance is no guarantee that the team will go far in the competition. Cameroon and Guinea won all their group matches and had the best attack and defense are out. On the contrary, Senegal, which crawled into the quarter finals after just one victory in the group stage, has succeeded to qualify for the prestigious round of four.
Cote d`Ivoire is the only 2006 World Cup bound team that is left in the race for the Nations Cup. Last Saturday, Tunisia joined Ghana, Angola and Togo, that bowed out of the competition earlier on. The Elephants say their performance is enough indication that they would represent the continent honourably in Germany.
The semi final matches would be played tomorrow. Egypt takes on Senegal at the Cairo International stadium, while Nigeria faces Cote d`Ivoire at the Harras El-Hedoud Stadium in Alexandria.
