Cameroon hopes end after Germany defeat (12.06.2002)
Cameroon had Patrick Suffo sent off as they crashed out of the World Cup with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Germany in an ill-tempered clash.
Marco Bode and Miroslav Klose were on target for Germany as Suffo received his marching orders after coming on as a substitute, but he was not the only man to find his way into the referee`s notebook as a total of 14 men were booked and Carsten Ramelow joined Suffo in seeing red.
Cameroon kept faith with the same side which scraped past Saudi Arabia and the Africans started nervously with Rigobert Song slashing over his own crossbar and Jancker heading over for Germany.
Saloman Olembe wasted the first real chance on goal after being sent clear by Samuel Eto`o, Oliver Kahn saving well although the midfielder should have done better.
Cameroon begun to take control and Pierre Wome`s fierce free-kick was beaten away by Kahn who saw the rebound hit Christian Metzelder and bounce just wide of the upright. Moments later Song wasted a great chance to give Cameroon the lead but he headed wide when left in oceans of space.
Chances were few and far between, before the game descended into a series of squabbles with bookings for both sides, before the flashpoint of the half.
Ramelow saw red for his two tackles on Eto`o, his first a
cynical challenge on the Real Mallorca striker and then as Eto`o weaved his way around the Germany defence Ramelow brought down the striker to receive his marching orders.
Voller decided to go for broke despite being down to 10 men, bringing on Bode for Jancker hoping to rely on the pace of the front two.
Almost immediately the substitution paid dividends with Bode sent clear by Klose to finish neatly beyond Alioum and give the 10 men of Germany the lead but once again the referee`s whistle stopped any flow to the game as the cards continued to be brandished.
Geremi, Olembe and Suffo were all booked in quick succession meaning 11 players had found their way into referee Antonio Lopez Nieto`s notebook - and it wasn`t to end there.
With Germany happy to contain and the referee intent on taking names chances were limited with Lauren`s header against the post as close as Cameroon were to get.
Cameroon`s challenge all but ended with Suffo`s red card as the Numancia striker was dismissed for a crude lunge and Germany sealed their triumph late on with Ballack`s ball finding Klose unmarked in the penalty area and the striker nodded home from close range for his fifth goal of the tournament to leave Germany top of Group E and send Winnie Schaefer`s men home after the first round.
