KK puts Geremi on a Reds alert (24.02.2008)

KEVIN KEEGAN has no qualms about giving Geremi his chance in a black-and-white shirt.
The Cameroon international has gone straight back into his squad for the clash with Manchester United tomorrow night.
The Indomitable Lions player has been absent for United since Boxing Day at Wigan, when he was hauled off by Sam Allardyce just after the hour mark.
It was a dark day for Geremi, who was also stripped of the captaincy at the JJB Stadium.
The experienced former Real Madrid player made an instant impact on the dressing room when he arrived from Chelsea in the summer, with the players nicknaming him Mandela for his diplomacy skills.
Geremi was responsible for persuading Charles N’Zogbia not to quit Tyneside for relegation candidates Fulham.
He will be the first to admit he has not recaptured the form he showed at Chelsea and Middlesbrough, but his form appears to have been given a shot in the arm during the African Cup of Nations tournament in Ghana.
Keegan said today: “Geremi is back and I met him for the first time on Monday.
“I have to say he is a good professional and he trains properly. He has come back here and got straight back into things.
“We have had good training days since Aston Villa, so hopefully we can carry those into the Manchester United game.”
Geremi – who
helped Cameroon to the final in Ghana before they narrowly lost 1-0 to Egypt – starred at right-back in the tournament.
He showed exactly what he can do from set-pieces by netting two superb free-kicks and crashing a 40-yard effort against the woodwork to deny him what would have been one of the goals of the competition.
Keegan added: “Geremi is a versatile player who can give us a few options.
“We are going to need that with the small squad we currently have here.”
Meanwhile, former Toon coach Alan Irvine has tipped Andy Carroll to one day pull on the No 9 jersey at St James’s Park after having the young gun on loan this season at Preston North End.
Irvine said: “At the moment, he might be a young lad who does not realise what he has.
“Andy is a fantastic shape and size, and has a terrific touch with both feet.
“He strikes the ball really well and is wonderful in the air, but he needs to properly focus on football.
“He needs to fully concentrate on being the best he can be.
“I have had a chat with him and wished him well.
“I told him how much potential I think he has, and I hope he uses a little bit of that advice.
“I said to him ‘you can become a great No 9 for Newcastle’.
“Andy knows all about the No 9 jersey, and his target should be to wear it for Newcastle United.”
