Mboma seeks long-term stability (03.07.2005)
When Cameroon`s football authorities appointed Patrick Mboma to the newly-created post of national team liaison officer back in January, there was no shortage of raised eyebrows both inside and outside the country.
But, speaking for the first time about his new role, the 34-year-old has told BBC Sport that he will establish hitherto non-existent lines of communication between players, officials and the government.
Mboma, who retired from the game in May this year, said: "My job now is to help solve problems that may arise between the playing staff and the team`s management."
In the two decades, Cameroon has played in five World Cup finals, won four African Nations Cup titles and Olympic gold in 2000.
This is an impressive record by any standard but the fact remains that over the years Cameroonian football has been undermined by seemingly endless squabbles between players and officials.
These spats often surface before and during big tournaments. But Mboma believes he is now in a position do something about what many have called the "cancer" of
Cameroonian football.
Mboma himself fell out with his country`s football chiefs in 2003 when he refused to play in the Confederations Cup, accusing officials of making arbitrary decisions.
But having spent six months in his new post, the retired striker is not only thrilled with the way things have gone so far, but is also looking forward to the challenges ahead.
"I want to use the experience I`ve gained as a professional player to help our football to be well organised. I`m here to offer advice," the 2000 African Footballer of the Year told BBC Sport.
"I haven`t received any negative comments about this job and from what people have been saying, everyone seems to be happy to have me as a member of the team.
"I can`t complain about the working conditions. I`m not doing this for the money, I just want to help.
"I want to give back to Cameroonian football what it gave me. This is the only thing I want.
"Even if Cameroon doesn`t qualify for the World Cup in Germany, I want to continue in this job. I have to build something for the long-term."
