The Gulf emirate of Qatar has appointed France`s Pierre Lechantre as national coach, the country`s football federation announced on Thursday.
Lechantre, who won Olympic gold in Sydney with Cameroon and qualified the west African champions for the 2002 World Cup finals, replaces Brazilian Paolo Campus.
Lechantre`s
first challenge will be the Gulf Cup in Saudi Arabia from January 16-29.
The Frenchman, who also lifted the 2002 African Nations Cup with Cameroon, became technical director of the west Africans but then took over as coach from Jean-Paul Akono.
A Qatari federation official did not reveal the length of Lechantre`s contract or his wages.
