Cameroon will face Holland tomorrow in a friendly encounter in Rotterdam.
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will tomorrow face their Dutch counterparts in a friendly encounter. The match in Rotterdam, Holland, is the first outing of the national football team after their not-too-impressive outing at the African Cup of Nations in Egypt where they were eliminated at the quarter finals. Coach, Jules Nyongha, is leading the squad made up essentially of players who took part in the 2006 African Cup of Nations debacle.
The stakes of tomorrow’s match are not as high as if the Lions were going to the World Cup in Germany. However, Cameroonians are anxiously waiting for the outcome of the match. A victory for the Lions will not only reassure their fans that they still have a team they can count on, but will also go to protect the label of the Indomitable Lions. Over the years, the Indomitable Lions have created a reputation which they are today obliged to live up to. The team has a name, an image and a myth to protect. In addition, the performance in the friendly will directly influence their rating on the FIFA monthly classification of teams.
It is certainly for these reasons that the Lions have been preparing seriously for the encounter. A four-day training camp (Monday May 22 to
Thursday May 25) was organised at Centre Leonard de Vinci in Lisses, France. A training match last Wednesday against a second division local side, FC Lissois, crowned the training camp. The Lions beat the locals, 7 — 1. Noticeably absent were Captain Rigobert Song, recently operated upon and Eto’o Fils who was in Israel to receive a peace and friendship prize. Today, the Lions, who travelled to Rotterdam by train yesterday afternoon, are expected to have two training sessions.
The task ahead of the Lions is daunting as the Dutch side, considered by many to be the finest football nation never to win the world cup, is also warming up seriously for the match. Netherlands is one of the world`s strongest national teams, having participated in the World Cup ten times and reached two consecutive World Cup finals, but losing both (1974 and 1978). At the peak of its success in the 1970s, the team was nicknamed "Clockwork Orange" for its precise passing. A victory against Cameroon will boost the morale of the squad that is seeking to set records straight after missing out on Korea/Japan 2002. It will be a good warm up for Coach Marco van Basten and his boys who are pooled in group (C) considered as one of the toughest. They will face Argentina, Côte d’Ivoire and Serbia and Montenegro in their first round matches.
