Song Bahanag, Captain of the National Football team, evaluates the just ended training camp.
What assessment can you make of the training camp?
It is good for us to meet before the match of September 04. We made very good use of the FIFA days to get together and work collectively. This has enabled us to talk, reason jointly and reinforce group cohesion. We have also come out with new tactics that would permit us to beat the Elephants. Although we did not play a strong friendly match like the one which Côte d’Ivoire played against France, we did exhibit our talents. The coaches were able to see what all the players could offer. And that is what matters.
On what particular aspect did the trainers lay emphasis?
We met to achieve something and add something new to our team. New players were called to camp. It was an occasion for us to see them play and talk with them. On the other hand, there is the group that has been together for a long time (played the last three matches with the new technical staff) they needed to continue to fine-tune their skills. There is always something to do; so the trainers left no stone unturned. They worked on the attack, the defence, the midfield, the goalkeeping, etc. the objective was to make us more solid than before. On the tactical level, the technicians know what they are doing.
To play, you absolutely need a victory on September 04 to continue to nurture hope to play the world cup.
It is true that the
encounter against Côte d’Ivoire is very important to us. This match will determine the next step for our qualification for the world cup. It will be out of question that we loss. It will be unimaginable for the lions to be absent in the next World Cup. We do not want to think of this. The stakes of the match are thus very high and we know it; we think about it all the time. We will do all at our reach to win. But, as a professional player, it is usually very nice to play such a match. It is far better than playing against countries or clubs which one does not master well. On the 4th of September, we will be facing a team that we know. Today, we cannot make calculations. We have used all our jokers. The only other option left is to win.
You are not afraid of the Elephants then?
No. I am not afraid of them at all. It will be an interesting match to play. It would be the final before the final, as I hear people say. Good. But we have a to win and turn the tide to our favour. It is a great challenge.
Any message for Cameroonians who are anxious at this moment?
I understand the anxiety. But they should know that Cameroon has always faced such situations and come out victorious. We should be calm. Continue to support us. The energy they will give us from a distance will enable us to overcome all the obstacles. September 04 will be a great day for Cameroon because we will beat Côte d’Ivoire. Cameroonians should as such be confident and have confidence in their players.
