FECAFOOT Signs Four-Year Contract with Puma (20.11.2006)
The agreement was signed last Friday.
The Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT, has formalised the contract with the German sports equipment company, Puma, that was renewed recently as the official provider of jerseys to Cameroon’s national football teams. The signing ceremony took place on Friday, November 17, at the Hilton hotel in Yaounde under the patronage of the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Augustin Edjoa.
Speaking during the ceremony, the president of FECAFOOT, Iya Mohammed, hailed the six-year long marriage between Puma and FECAFOOT saying in six years, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have given notoriety to the Puma mark. He revealed that FECAFOOT’s contract with Puma this time has the peculiarity that, Puma will open shops in Douala and Yaounde where original Puma products will be on sale. Though the amount of the contract was not made public, sources close to FECAFOOT say it stands at 5 billion.
The Vice President of Puma, Horst Widmann, who signed for his company, said he was happy Puma was able to win the contract for the second time especially as the competition had been rough.
Cameroon, he said, was one of the best teams in the world. Though Italy won the recent World Cup in Germany with Puma jerseys, Horst Widmann said Cameroon which did not even qualify for the competition, was on a higher pedestal than Italy with the Puma Company.
The Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Augustin Edjoa, thanked Puma for having an interest in Cameroon despite the failure to qualify for the World Cup and expressed the wish that the renewal of the contract would lead to greater victories for the Lions in the African Cup of Nations in Ghana and the World Cup in South Africa. He called on Puma to provide a befitting bus for the Lions and worthy of people who put on the Puma mark. He said government will spare no effort to support sports in the country but called on federation presidents to emulate the example of FECAFOOT by looking for sponsors. He promised not to interfere in the affairs of sports federations and in return, expects loyalty, collaboration and respect from federation presidents. Samples of new outfits for the Lions were on display during the signing ceremony, with the traditional colours of green, red and yellow.
