Patrick Mboma desperate for Bolton show (05.03.2002)
Patrick Mboma is ready to play through the pain barrier in a bid to help Sunderland`s Premiership cause.The Cameroon striker, who scored on his full debut at Spurs on Saturday, is nursing a back injury and faces a race against time to be fit to face Bolton tomorrow.
But the 31-year-old is desperate to play in the massive Stadium of Light fixture.
He said: "I hope I can recover for the Bolton game, but I don`t know how bad the injury is.
"I just turned quickly and felt a very bad pain in my back. I need to have it examined.
"I don`t want to miss the Bolton game because it is a massive match now. They are fighting relegation and we don`t want to drop any further down the league.
"We have had a bad day losing at Tottenham and picking up so many injuries. But we must take the positives from the game and we again made good chances to score. We need to take those chances now."
Reid is preparing for the visit of Sam Allardyce`s men with a lengthy injury list.
The Sunderland boss will be without Claudio Reyna (hamstring), Joachim Bjorklund (hamstring),
Emerson Thome (knee), Julio Arca (groin), Gavin McCann (knee) and Paul Thirlwell (ankle).
And Mboma (back) and George McCartney (shin) both face late fitness tests.
The Cameroon international impressed on his first start for the Black Cats, scoring their goal in a 2-1 defeat at White Hart Lane.
And the on-loan Parma man thought he should have had a penalty after being upended by Dean Richards.
He said: "I am pleased to have scored but at the end I could not be happy because I want to win games.
"This is two defeats now since I joined the club and it is not what I wanted and not what I expected.
"I think we made enough chances against Newcastle and Tottenham to have deserved a draw in both games, but we have got nothing.
"And, for me, it was a definite penalty in the second half on Saturday. I was about to shoot and the guy took me out. It should have been an easy decision because it was a clear foul I think.
"It was a very important decision because we would have gone ahead if we had scored the penalty and that would have changed the game."
