Namibians `offered money` to throw match (28.01.2008)
The Africa Cup of Nations match-fixing scandal gathered pace yesterday as Namibia`s players came forward to say they had been offered $30,000 (£15,000) a man to lose against Guinea tomorrow. Benin`s coach Reinhart Farbisch had revealed last week that he was approached by a man claiming to represent a betting syndicate offering to pay him to ensure his side were defeated by Mali in their opening game.
John Muinjo, the Namibia Football Association president, said he had immediately called a meeting with the squad, warning them of the dangers of bribery.
"I`m very proud that my players came to see me straight away," he said. "They are a team who believe in fair play." The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have launched an investigation into the matter.
Cameroon, champions last time the tournament was played in Ghana, got their campaign back on track last night with a 5-1 victory over Zambia. Defeat, coupled with anything other than a victory for Sudan over Egypt in the other group game, would have ensured Cameroon`s elimination, but that never looked likely once Geremi had put them ahead with a 28th-minute free-kick. Joseph-Desire Job added a second four minutes later, before Arsenal`s Alexandre Song, a far more commanding presence in midfield than Jean Makoun had been in the 4-2 defeat to Egypt, played in Achille Emana for a third just before half-time.
Cameroon allowed the pace to drop after the break, and against a side with better finishers than Zambia could easily have found themselves under pressure, but any vague doubts as to the outcome were dispelled 20 minutes into the second half as Samuel Eto`o converted a penalty to take his tally in the Nations Cup to a record-equalling 14. A terrible backheader from Clive Hachilensa then presented Job with a fifth before Christopher Katongo volleyed in to give Zambia some reward for their second-half purposefulness. A 5-1 scoreline flattered them, but the Indomitable Lions at
leastshould not, as their west African rivals Nigeria easily could, be going home after the first round.
This has not been a good season for Obafemi Martins. Newcastle`s disappointing start to the season cost Sam Allardyce his job and, with Nigeria on the brink of an embarrassingly early exit from the Cup of Nations, Berti Vogts could soon become the second manager Martins has lost in a month. The forward has little sympathy for Allardyce. "If the manager`s not doing very well, of course they will let him go," he said. "I think I should have played more. I don`t know why he didn`t pick me. I never talked to the manager. I never knew anything."
With games producing an average of around three goals, there has been some stunning football in the tournament, but the same cannot be said for the organisation, which has failed at just about every level: Claude Leroy, the Ghana coach, called the pitch in Accra the worst he had seen in over 20 years of working in Africa.
The first games in Sekondi were hampered by long grass after the man with the lawnmower failed to turn up as promised, then the floodlights failed, delaying the second part of the double header by 15 minutes.
The pyrotechnic finale to the opening ceremony had to be cancelled when it was pointed out that it was scheduled to be held not at night, but in the middle of the afternoon.
In Tamale, several thousand fans were locked out after organisers printed only 10,000 tickets for a 20,000-seat stadium, which turned out to have been for the best as the main gates were left locked after the final whistle, creating a dangerous and pickpocket friendly crush as everybody left by squeezing backwards through the turnstiles.
Egypt produced the best performance of the first week in beating Cameroon 4-2 - revenge perhaps for the Indomitable Lions "borrowing" the plane that was supposed to be taking them from Accra to Kumasi.
