Great Sports Nation : football is among the most popular sports in Britain. (09.03.2004)

Of all events that have shaped British history, sports, notably football, is without doubt, among the most remarkable. Not even the 1848 industrial revolution has shaped the British national character and the course of world event like the game of football, unarguably the world most popular sport.
England might have only won the World Cup once (1966) but football is an English game! The Englsih might not have had the magnanimity to produce a Pele, Maradona or Roger Milla, but they boast of some of the world`s best who have enshrined their names in the annals of soccer history. A list of remarkable contrasts; from the world`s most legendary goalkeeper Gordon Banks, passing through Paul Gascoigne, to Garry Linekar, Michael Owen and the magnetic David Beckham. The class of sportsmen mirrors the quality of sports infrastructure in the country and is telling of the ability to host world class events like Euro 96 and the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. The Games were presided at by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
In effect, professional football is highly developed in Great Britain. The country has some of the finest football clubs in the world in which the cream of world footballers exhibit their talents. Giants, Manchester United, is the richest football club in the world with a supporter base of 20 million
fans. Chelsea has eight million fans and ranks fifth, with rivals Arsenal closing the file in the 10th position.
Cameroonians are among the lot who are creating sensation in the English premier league. Djemba Djemba is staking it out with Manchester United, Olembe Olembe Salomon in Leeds United, Geremi Njitap in Chelsea; Etame Mayer in Arsenal and Job Joseph Desire scoring goals in Middlesbrough. Last week, Job created history by inspiring his club to it`s first major trophy in 128 years. Many other Cameroonians are leaving their mark in British lower division football.
Besides football, the British also adore Rugby, athletics, skiing and boxing. Last year, the British Ruby national team won the Rugby World Cup in Australia. It was the greatest victory in British Sports after the World Cup in 1966. In athletics, Britain is home to world champions in several discipline. Linford Christi is world champion in 100 metres while Dwane Chambers is the current European champion 100metres. Britain also changed the world boxing order when Lenox Lewis, beat Americans to win all the three major world Heavyweight boxing titles.
In three months time, Britain will be participating in the 16 - nation European Nations football tournament. Reports say some 50,000 England fans are expected to travel to Portugal for the event that starts in June.
