Football: The Great Day (22.12.2005)
The final of the Cup of Cameroon in football is a moment of great communion between the Head of State and the population.
The 46th edition of the National Challenge Cup final, that will pit Impôt Yaounde and Unisport Bafang, will take place today. It is expected to be presided at by the Head of State, Paul Biya. The decor had been set since last Tuesday afternoon. The final rehearsal of the pre-match displays — march past and coordinated parade, took place under the supervision of officials of the State protocol and Civil cabinet. Present were several members of government whose ministerial departments are involved in the organisation.
Those who would make it to the Yaounde Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium this afternoon would certainly enjoy the show, that would last some 20 minutes. The choreographic display, for example, will not only entertain spectators but also exalt Cameroon’s rich cultural diversity and convey messages of unity and peace. The 400 youths from schools in Yaounde and cheer leaders (majorettes), will also dance to the rhythm of the ten provinces of Cameroon.
Access into the stadium will be either through an invitation or a paid entry ticket. There are two categories of tickets — one for the "popular side" and another for the Presidential tribune. The tickets for the popular side will cost CFA 300, while those of the Presidential tribune will be sold at CFA 10,000. Tribunes A and B will be
exclusively for those with invitation cards. According to the First Vice President of FECAFOOT, Jean Réné Atangana Mballa, the present move is to mobilise the greatest number of persons. As he puts it, the event is not a money-making venture, but an occasion for great communion and merry making.
The Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium, venue of the event, is already at its best. The Mfandena sports facility has been completely refurbished. The playground has been well trimmed and a coat of paint sprayed to brighten the stadium. The surroundings of the stadium have also been tidied.
Unisport Bafang and Impot FC are already set for the event. The teams have been fine-tuning their skills over the past two weeks. Impôt FC on the offensive. After its feat at the Interpools concretised by admission into Division I, the club owned by the department of Taxation, is leaving nothing to chance in its drive to attain its greatest ambition of the season; grab the Cup of Cameroon in front of the Head of State. Unisport Bafang is in search of a new image. The team that has been relegated into Division II, knows the club can only stay afoot next season if it wins the Cup of Cameroon.
The final of the Cup of Cameroon in football marks the end of the sports season in the country. It is a moment of great communion between the Head of State and the population, especially as the event is attended by members of all sports federations in the country.
