     Government Prescribes Vigilance (07.10.2005)








    Special instructions given to members of government whose sectors would play a role during tomorrow’s match.

    The fact that the Indomitable Lions would be seeking qualification for the next World Cup in front of their supporters makes tomorrow’s match special. Fans of the Lions would be looking forward to just one result; victory. But, since it is a football encounter with three possible outcomes; the national team of Cameroon can also draw or loss the match.

    Yesterday, the Secretary General of the Prime Minister’s Office, Jules Doret Ndongo, on behalf of the Prime Minister and Head of Government, chaired a meeting to evaluate the state of preparedness for tomorrow’s match, remind all actors of their duties and commitments and above all identify problem areas and provide measures to pre-empt trouble. Several members of government, whose sectors would play a role during tomorrow’s match (sports, communication, health, security, etc) took part in the meeting.

    The SG of the PM’s office explained that although no one hopes for a defeat, if it does happens, it should not be a pretext for disorder that can tarnish the image of Cameroon. He therefore handed special instructions from the Prime Minister, Head of Government, to ensure that the encounter is hitch-free. The Minister of Sports and Physical Education was called upon to ensure the tranquillity of the Lions in their hotel and make sure that the Egyptians are well taken care of. The Sports and Physical Education boss also has to ensure that the number of tickets prescribed by the world football governing body, FIFA, is respected to avoid over crowding. Water and








    electricityshould be available. In the same light, a section of the stadium should be reserved for Egyptian supporters and measures taken to provide a conducive working environment to Egyptian reporters. All working facilities should be put at their disposal at the stadium. The Sports minister was also asked to transmit the message of support of the Head of State to the Lions, as well as exalt their spirit of courage, abnegation, patriotism and cohesion that serve as model.

    The Minister of Communication was asked to sensitise the public of the possibility of a defeat as the encounter is just a game meant to reinforce friendship ties between Cameroon and Egypt. The press should also educate spectators on the need for fair play.

    The Minister of Public Health was told to make sure that the medical corps is in place from the time the stadium is opened, and ensure that they are present in and out of the stadium through out the match. He was also instructed to reinforce that standby units in hospitals in Yaounde.

    Security services were asked to guarantee safety of potential targets: referees, other officials, players, Egyptians, etc. They were also told to demarcate a security zone around the stadium reserved for people with tickets, elaborate a circulation plan around the stadium, avoid actions that can create panic and meticulously control all those entering the stadium to make sure that they do not carry dangerous objects. The security should above all quickly take the teams out of the stadium immediately the match ends to avoid an excess overspill of joy or anger. Spectators were also to be closely watched after match irrespective of the result.
