MTN offers money and jerseys to provincial champions (15.11.2004)
Martin Etonge
The partnership agreement between FECAFOOT and the number one African mobile telephone operator, MTN has reached another milestone.
In their continues support and sponsorship of Cameroon football, MTN have dished out over 60 million CFA Francs to sponsor this year’s Interpools competition which involves ten provincial champions vying for four places in the national division one competition.
Each of the ten clubs was paid 4 million Francs and will be given two sets of jerseys, all valued at 10 million Francs, 72 hours before the debut of the competition scheduled for 23 November in Yaounde and Douala.
The donation ceremony was presided over by FECAFOOT secretary general, Jean Rene Atangana Mballa. Addressing club and MTN officials, Atangana Mballa reminded them of the convention signed between MTN and FECAFOOT since January 2002 and renewed last April, in which MTN accepted to sponsor national football competitions.
Atangana Mballa was happy to announce that the convention is being properly
executed by both parties.
“… cooperation between both parties (FECAFOOT and MTN) is going on well. We are happy about that. And we are happier today to formally hand over MTN subsidies and materials to clubs which have qualified for Interpools 2004”, Atangana Mballa declared.
He was also glad to announce that compared to last year, there has been a substantial increase in the amount of subsidies to clubs.
MTN deputy general manager, Jean Claude Ottou agreed completely with the words of Atanagana Mballa and added that MTN was always happy to be part of the football family.
After handing the donations to the teams, it was agreed that it was compulsory for all clubs to wear the jerseys offered by MTN because MTN retained exclusive rights over the Interpools.
Club officials recognised the vital role the subsidies will play in helping their teams prepare and competent adequately in Interpools 2004.
Through different contracts, MTN pumps in at least 450 million Francs each season in Cameroon football.
