ACN/WC 2010 : Lions Clash with Tanzania Next Saturday (12.06.2008)
The match counts for the ongoing twin qualifiers for the World and African Cup of Nations.
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon continue their campaign for the African Cup of Nations in Angola and the World Cup in South Africa this week end with a match against Tanzania. It is worthy to mention the perform qualifying round of the continental and world cup competitions. After the 2-0 victory at home against Cape Verde on the first day of play, the Lions travelled to the Mauritius Island to trounce the local side, 3-0.
A victory which places Cameroon at the helm of group one with six points, three points ahead of their immediate challenger, Cape Verde that beat Tanzania 1-0 on the second day of play to occupy the second position with three points.
Cameroon will therefore be out to consolidate their leadership position in the group when the slug it out with Tanzania on Saturday, June 14, 2008. After the match with Cape Verde, the Lions had only a day’s rest before resuming training at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium in preparation for the match against the Mauritius Island last
Sunday. After the match against Mauritius Island, the Lions rested again only for a day before hitting the road last Tuesday for Tanzania. On Monday, they had a relax session on the shore of the ocean in Mauritius before boarding the plane for Tanzania where they have resumed training ahead of the match. The Confederation of African Football CAF, and the world football governing body, FIFA, agreed on the qualifiers to be played at this point in time because European leagues where most of the players are based, are on holidays and matches can be organised without going into the hurdles of having clubs release players while their respective championships were still going on.
There is serenity in the Lion’s den as there was more fright than harm after the star striker, Samuel Eto’o Fils sustained an injury in the match against the Mauritius Island and was replaced by home-based Bebey Mbangue who got an own goal in the match. Haunted by the failure to qualify for the World Cup in Germany in 2006, the Cameroonians want to ‘make no erreur’ in the qualifiers this time to erase the sad memories of Germany 2006.
