Nigeria put Liberia out as sad Weah signs off with defeat (29.01.2002)
MOPTI
Nigeria sent George Weah into an unhappy retirement here Monday with a 1-0 win over Liberia to march into the quarter-finals of the African Nations Cup as Group A winners.
The Nigerians were by far the better side throughout an entertaining tussle in this dusty town 650km north of the capital and settled the match with a 63rd-minute header from Julius Aghahowa.
A cross from the right by Augustine `Jayjay` Okocha created confusion in the Liberian box and when defender George Gebro fluffed his clearance, Shakthar Donetsk player Aghahowa was on hand to head home.
Aghahowa celebrated his second goal of the tournament with his trademark sequence of six backflips before being mobbed by his relieved team-mates.
Aghahowa admitted it had been a tough encounter but the victory showed they were running into form at the right time.
"It was a hard game and we got through it," he said.
"We are getting into our rhythm now and we are starting to pick it up a bit. We are looking forward to the next round," he added.
However veteran Sunday Oliseh reflected the pressure faced by the Nigerians when competing at this tournament.
"It was a tough game and we were a bit nervous early on. If we had scored earlier on you would have seen some great football," he said.
"Quarter-finals are always difficult at the African Nations Cup especially if you are pulling on the green and white of Nigeria as there is a lot of pressure on us to do well," he added.
Former world footballer of the year and AC Milan star Weah, who has said he will quit international football following Liberia`s campaign here, was unable to inspire his team to a win that would have knocked out Nigeria.
Hosts Mali joined Nigeria in the quarter-finals after beating Algeria 2-0 in Monday`s other match.
Nigeria will now play the runner-up of Group B in Sunday`s quarter-finals, expected to be Morocco.
Mali will play the
winner from Group B in the last eight, which will be either South Africa, Burkina Faso or Ghana.
Nigeria can look ahead to the knockout phase with confidence after dominating Liberia for most of the match in front of a 7,000 crowd at the newly constructed Barema Bogoum Stadium.p
Only a string of superb saves from Liberia`s goalkeeper Louis Crayton - including one from a 40th-minute Finidi George penalty - stopped Nigeria winning by a bigger margin.
Arsenal`s Nwankwo Kanu and midfielder Garba Lawal both forced Crayton into acrobatic diving stops in the second-half as the Nigerians laid siege to the Liberian goal.
Liberia`s best efforts came when Weah saw a 56th minute close-range shot go agonisingly wide of a post. Midfielder Prince Daye also saw a spectacular volley well-stopped by Ike Shorunmu in the Nigerian goal.
Nigeria had dominated the first-half, stringing passes together confidently for long passages of play.
Their superiority looked to have got its reward five minutes from the interval when Liberia midfielder Oliver Makor gave a penalty away for handling an awkward cross from Kanu.
But although George`s spot-kick was low and well-struck, Crayton was equal to the challenge, getting down brilliantly to turn the ball clear.
Nigeria could only curse squandering the gilt-edged chance after they had already gone close with a handful of attempts.
In the seventh minute fullback Ifeanyi Udeze broke down the left and crossed for Aghahowa, who just failed to get a foot to the left-back`s low centre.
Moments later a tidy Nigerian build-up ended with Okocha smashing a shot goalbound which Crayton could only parry clear.
In the 21st minute centre-half Taribo West sent a rising 25-yard freekick flying several inches over the crossbar.
Shortly before the half-hour mark Okocha unleashed another long-range shot that had Crayton scrambling once more, the Liberian stopper fisting away.
