Feminine football: Under 20 Lionesses Called to Camp (13.12.2007)
It is in preparation for the African championship match against Benin next January 11.
After having been left in the cold for so long, the national female football team is to resume action next January. Some 40 players have been called to camp by the new head coach of the Indomitable Lionesses, Enow Achu. The training camp scheduled to take place from 12 to 19 December, constitutes the first phase of preparations for the Under 20 African Championship match against the republic of Benin next January 11.
The short-listed players comprise four goalkeepers, 10 defenders, 12 midfielders and 14 strikers. Though the players are drawn from all over the national territory, the majority of
them come from clubs in the Centre and Littoral provinces who have been dominating feminine football in the country, since its inception.
It would be recalled that the female national football squad though qualified for the All African Games in Algeria, failed to take part in the games because of budgetary constraints that forced the government to sacrifice the discipline under the pretext that it didn’t have a good chance to win a medal in the games. The resumption of activities in the domain of feminine football started with the organisation of the national championship and cup in Yaounde, which gave the new technical staff of the team, the opportunity to detect players for the national squad.
