World Cup failure angers fans (09.10.2005)

Players of Cameroon`s national team were trapped in the stadium for over two hours, following their failure to qualify for next year`s World Cup finals.

The Indomitable Lions needed to defeat Egypt in Saturday`s game in Yaounde but only managed a 1-1 draw.

They hid in the dressing room to avoid the wrath of irate fans, angry that the country will miss out on their first World Cup finals since 1990.

The disappointed supporters, who were waiting in ambush for the players, had threatened to "teach them a lesson" for failing to deliver the World Cup ticket.

"They (the Indomitable Lions) can`t come and let us down in

our own very backyard", one annoyed fan shouted.

Fans also ran amok in the streets near the stadium, smashing car windows with stones and sticks.

A disappointed Philippe Mbarga Mboa, Cameroon`s minister of sport, did not wait for the Group Three match to end.

He left the stadium as soon as Mohammed Shawky scored Egypt`s equaliser in the 80th minute.

Fans were particularly angry with Pierre Wome, who missed the stoppage time penalty that could have taken the Lions to Germany 2006.

They threatened to destroy the player`s vehicle and property in Yaounde.

The angry fans were finally chased away by an army battalion who came to help the overwhelmed police.
