Cadet Lions Thrill Yaounde Public (16.06.2003)
It was a mammoth crowd that turned out last Friday to cheer the cadet lions.
"The impossible is not Cameroonian!" "Cameroon, champions forever!" These are some of the remarks made by onlookers last Friday afternoon during the tour of the Yaounde metropolis by the national cadet team following their brilliant performance in Mbabane-Swaziland last Sunday. They elbowed their counterparts from Sierra Leone 1-0 to lift the U-17 African championship for the first time. This is not the first time a national team is parading the capital city, but last Friday’s parade was special because it was the first time to win a trophy in that category. It was a mammoth crowd that turned up to express their satisfaction and appreciation to the cadet lions. Fans clubs belonging to different players stole the show as they sang and danced tirelessly around town. Even before the start of the tour from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, these group of young Cameroonians started jubilating around town from the presidency, chanting songs of encouragement and support for the players. "The boys are talented. They have brought us honour. We cannot play like them so we have to encourage them," said one excited fan. The cadet lions drove through the streets of Yaounde,
covering a distance of over 20 km, brandishing their trophy which was a proof of hard work and love for their fatherland. In some places, it was not easy for the convoy to get through as the population wanted to touch the young and energetic lions. Some people did not only want to touch them but also, cherished taking pictures with them. Most children left their homes and waited impatiently by the roadsides in their neighbourhoods to get a glimpse of the lions and their trophy. Many of them who are sports lovers also wished to keep the company of the team. The tour around town lasted for over two hours with no major incident recorded. It ended at the Ministry of Youth and Sports where it began. The numerous supporters and fans clubs that thronged the Ministry of Youth and Sports, watched with a lot of admiration. One happy mother brandished a picture of the cadet lions pointing to his son in a show of satisfaction for the heroic deed of the squad. Team captain, Momo Epande Gilbert, on behalf his mates expressed gratitude to the Head of State for the singular reception organised in their honour. He hailed the public for their enthusiasm and encouragement and promised that they will defend the national colours in the upcoming world championship in Finland honourably.
