Songo`o Snr in Deepdale visit (11.03.2007)
Jacques Songo`o, the legendary Cameroon goalkeeper, will be in Preston hoping to see his boy Franck make his home debut for North End.
"My dad is going to be here to watch the next home game," said Songo`o Jnr after signing for the club this week on loan from Portsmouth. So I hope I`ll be playing some part of it."
Jacques was in the Cameroon World Cup squad at Italia `90, USA `94, France `98 and the 2002 finals in South Korea and Japan.
His greatest wish was to play against his son in a professional game. But the pair never shared the same pitch despite Jacques keeping goal for Deportivo La Coruna at the same time that his son was starting out as a player with Barcelona.
Songo`o Snr started his professional career with French club Toulon in 1989/90 and went on to play for Le Mans, FC Metz (twice) and Deportivo (twice), eventually hanging up his gloves in 2004 at the grand old age of 40.
His last game was for Deportivo as a late substitute in a 1-0 win over Racing Santander in May, 2004, making him the second oldest player ever in the Spanish League.
Jacques, now 42, was a member of the Cameroon squad in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and played more than 70 times for his country over a period of 15 years.
While he started his career in French football his most successful time came in Spain with Deportivo, a club he joined in 1996.
Over five seasons he played 150 times, helping the club to win the La Liga title in 1999/2000. He also won the coveted
Zamora Trophy awarded to Spanish football`s best goalkeeper over a season.
He lost his place in the side in 2000/2001 when Deportivo bought Spain international Jose Francisco Molina.
Songo`o moved back to Metz, only to make an emotional return to Deportivo in 2003/2004 as emergency cover.
He did not play a solitary game until making his appearance as sub nine minutes from time against Racing Santander to a standing ovation from the La Coruna crowd. He made two important saves to deny Racing a point.
Known to team-mates and fans as `Eddie Murphy` because of his likeness to the American comedian, Jacques retired in 2004 and still lives in Spain where his son Franck learned his football in the Barcelona junior teams alongside Lionel Messi, Arsenal`s Cesc Fabregas and Manchester United`s Gerard Pique.
Songo`o Jnr said: "We were all there at the same time and in the same team. What they are doing now as players we were doing when we were 12.
"Lionel was always a quick, tricky player who scored goals. Cesc was always moving the team forward.
"They are all very good players and it is no surprise to see them where they are now.
"Cesc and I keep in touch. I go and see him sometimes. I was going to see Lionel at Liverpool on Tuesday. I support Barca, I had tickets for the game, but I didn`t end up going.
"It was a shame they lost, but Liverpool deserved to win."
