Lions leave Cameroon with blessings of fans (14.05.2002)
On their way to the World Cup, Cameroon`s Indomitable
Lions have said farewell to home fans in a gala game
between themselves in Yaounde.
The game on Friday came ahead of their departure for
the Netherlands, where they begin camping for the World Cup.
Out of 29 players summoned to camp, 20 were in Yaounde for the farewell ceremony.
Cornerstones Geremi Njitap, Samuel Eto`o, Lauren
Etame, Patrick Mboma and Patrick Suffo were amongst the absentees.
Over 60.000 fans attended the game in which Bertrand
Tchoutang of Rhoda FC, Holland hurt himself and
compromised his chances of winning a place in Winni
Schafer`s World Cup squad. While Joseph Desire Job and
goalkeeper Carlos Idriss Kameni won the hearts of the fans.
To thank the fans for their support and blessings, the
players offered them balls and shirts.
"It`s nice to have the crowd out here to wish us well.
The shirts and balls are our own way to thank them for
the massive support and believe in our mission",skipper Rigobert Song said.
The game came after the team was received by the prime
/> minister, Peter Musonge. As a confidence booster, the
PM told the team that the nation counted on them
because they knew their job and performed it pleasantly.
The PM assured the team of government support."The
people and government will put all means at your
disposal to enable you achieve victory", Mr. Musonge promised.
On behalf of the people and government, Mr. Musonge
encouraged the team. "Go ahead, do a honorable fight and win".
FECAFOOT chairman, Iya Mohamed said it was a similar
reception that the PM offered the team four months ago
before they left for Mali 2002. And since the team
succeeded in the Nations Cup, then a similar result
would be notched in the World Cup.
"The guests, officials and decor are the same like in
January (when the team was seen off for Mali 2002). So
why will the result in the World Cup not be similar?",Mr. Iya said.
Skipper Song assured the PM of their fighting spirit
and determination to win. "We are aware of our mission
and we`ll do our best to ameliorate on the World Cup
record of Cameroon", Song promised.
