The Lion`s Supper (02.02.2006)
Medical doctors are meticulous in selecting the meals.
Nutrition plays an important role in the performance of athletes. Having a balanced diet is therefore a prerogative for good performance. It is for this reason that most sportsmen are always on balance diet; selecting with care what and when they eat. At the ongoing African Cup of Nations, the medical doctors of the different teams oversee what and when their players eat. This task should certainly be complex if we have to go by the nutrition disparity between countries. For example, local Egyptian food is very different from Cameroonian dishes.
But Dr Atchou Guillaume, the head of the medical team of the Indomitable Lions, says the task of deciding what players would eat is not very difficult since all the components of a balanced diet are available everywhere in the world. "Irrespective of where you find yourself in the world, you can still get the basic elements of a good diet — proteins,
carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, etc. The essential thing is to adapt", he said.
Generally, the Lions have three compulsory meals everyday — breakfast, lunch and supper. "I dialogue with the hotel staff on a daily basis on what they have to include in the menu of the players. I am happy that so far, they have been respecting my directives", Dr Atchou said. The doctor explained that the activities and tasks of the day determine what he programmes for meal. "They need to eat a lot of energy providing food when they have to put in a lot of effort", he said.
During match days, provision is always made for snacks at half time. "Players put in a lot of energy when playing. That is why it is important that they replenish their systems during half time" the doctor explained.
During the first round of the 25th African Cup of nations, the Lions and the Hawks of Togo ate virtually the same food. Both teams were lodged in the same hotel.
