A stoppage-time goal from substitute Giovanni van Bronckhorst earned Primera Liga title-chasers Barcelona a point in a controversial six-goal thriller against Real Betis at the Nou Camp on Sunday.
Joaquin Sanchez and Samuel Eto`o scored a brace for either side with the Cameroon striker`s goals both coming from the penalty spot. Ricardo Oliveira also found the net for Betis before Van Bronckhorst raised the roof in the dying seconds.
The equaliser was harsh on the visitors, who had to play for 75 minutes with only 10 men after David Rivas was sent off for holding back Deco leading up to the first penalty.
Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard was forced to start with Fernando Navarro at centre-half alongside Oleguer Presas with Carles Puyol out injured while in mid-field Gerard Lopez was also making a rare start with Rafael Marquez suspended.
While Barca were their usual impressive selves in attack, the Azulgrana were struggling to cope with the visitors on the counter-attack.
Betis stormed into an 11th minute lead through Joaquin with a goal that was constructed down the left wing.
Fernando found Edu down the line as he crossed to Joaquin who beat Sylvinho to the ball at the back post.
In an entertaining end-to-end match Barca were not behind for long, four minutes in fact, before the referee blew for a penalty and also sent off Rivas for a foul on Deco.
The former Porto player had been sent through on goal by Ronaldinho and was then tugged back by the centre-half. Eto`o stepped up to send the goalkeeper the
wrong way from the spot.
As the first half progressed Betis were posing greater danger, especially through the pace of Oliveira, who was responsible for putting the Andalusians back in front with a fine goal after 39 minutes.
Marcos Assuncao broke through midfield and played in Oliveira. The Brazilian still had a lot of work to do, but his first touch was excellent to take him away from Oleguer and he then ran in on goal and coolly beat goalkeeper Victor Valves.
With the numerical advantage, Rijkaard opted to bring on Maxi Lopez at half-time and took off Gerard.
Barca poured forward with Ronaldinho producing a sublime flick for Maxi, who fired wide.
Antonio Doblas then tipped an Eto`o curler onto the crossbar, and Maxi inexplicably missed the rebound in front of an open goal.
The hosts were lucky to escape when an Oliveira break led to his shot being repelled by Valdes but on the hour mark Betis grabbed a third through Joaquin.
Oliveira found the Spain international and he side-footed the ball past Valdes with the ball going in off the post.
Barca continued to squander chances but they managed to pull a goal back with a contentious penalty which was again scored by Eto`o.
Edu was adjudged to have pushed Juliano Belletti in the back, although there was little contact, and the Cameroon forward again made no mistake with the penalty.
The referee added five minutes of injury time which allowed Van Bronckhorst, on for Xavi Hernandez, to reach a Deco through-ball and lob the goalkeeper to rescue a point at the death.
