Zidane-less France prepare for physical curtain-raiser with Senegal (29.05.2002)
SEOUL
Holders France bring up the curtain on the 2002 World Cup against Senegal here on Friday without their most distinguished performer Zinedine Zidane.
The inspirational playmaker who scored twice in the 1998 final to bring the trophy to France partly tore a thigh muscle in the 3-2 defeat of tournament co-hosts South Korea on Sunday, giving the holders an unexpected headache.
Team doctor Jean-Marcel Ferret said Zidane could miss France`s two other first round matches against Denmark and Uruguay.
France are far from a one-man team, but they are less successful without Zidane.
Patrick Vieira, one of the players who will have to fill the gap, stressed on Wednesday that France had enough strength in depth even without the world`s most expensive player.
"We`ll just have to live with it because there`s nothing we can do," said Vieira. "Injuries can happen to anyone at anytime. But we can still win without him."
Vieira said he was expecting a tough match against the west Africans who are playing in their first World Cup.
"We can expect a physical battle on Friday because Senegal are well above the average in that respect," said the Arsenal midfielder.
"We`re better on a technical level but Senegal will close the gap with their determination."
Veteran Youri Djorkaeff is expected to take Zidane`s place and will be expected to feed a strikeforce of Thierry Henry, who has shaken off a knee injury, David Trezeguet and Sylvain Wiltord.
While France appear stronger in attack than the 1998 team, they have lost defensive rock Laurent Blanc and
a question mark hangs over the 34-year-old Frank Leboeuf who is expected to partner Marcel Desailly in central defence.
Senegal may have never appeared at a World Cup before but their players have no lack of club experience - in fact 20 of the 23-man squad earn a living playing for French clubs, while just five of the French squad are based at home.
The two teams are further intertwined - Senegal coach Bruno Metsu is a Frenchman and Vieira was born in Dakar, only moving to France at the age of eight.
Given little chance of reaching the finals when drawn in qualifying against Morocco, Egypt and Algeria, Senegal shocked their rivals by winning the group.
They have had a mixed run of results in warm-up matches, struggling past fellow World Cup qualifiers Ecuador 1-0 last week after an unimpressive 0-0 draw with Japanese J-League club Kashiwa Reysol.
The west Africans` preparations were hit by reports on Tuesday that key midfielder Khalilou Fadiga was under investigation by police for stealing a 240-dollar gold necklace from a shop in the southern Korean city of Daegu.
Fadiga was expected to start the match alongside tough-tackling defender Ferdinand Coly.
The attacking threat chiefly comes from African footballer of the year El-Hadji Diouf, the pacy striker whose goals almost took Lens to the French title this year.
Nicknamed the `Serial Killer`, Diouf can turn a match and Metsu will let him run free to test Leboeuf`s speed and endurance.
"Diouf always produces his best for the national team because we give him total freedom and he needs that," said Metsu.
