     Cameroon-Japan: Showdown Tomorrow (21.08.2007)

The friendly will take place in Oita-Japan.

Five years after the debacle in the World Cup in Japan, the Indomitable Lions are once more in the Empire of the East for a friendly football encounter with that country. The match falls within the framework of reinforcing Japan-Cameroon relations. Japan is currently renovating the mythical Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium with funding from the Japanese foreign ministry.

The match is likely to be the last for Jules Frederic Nyongha as interim head coach of Cameroon’s darling football team, the Indomitable Lions, as a new coach is expected to be appointed in the days ahead. The new coach will have the responsibility to prepare the national team for the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Ghana and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Shortly after the Japanese expedition, the Indomitable Lions will have to play against the Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea in a return leg match counting for qualifiers for the African Cup of Nations in January.

Jules Nyongha, who was assisted by Thomas Nkono as trainer for goalkeepers, established a short list of 18 players, all professionals for the Japanese expedition. Nyongha made two

lastminute changes to his 18 man squad including the goalkeeper Gilbert Bayiha to replace the injured Idriss Kameni, and Landry Nguemo, who takes the place of Geremi Njitap. The new Newcastle United captain missed the trip because of apparent administrative problems.

Landry Nguemo`s absence from the original squad was a surprise given his excellent form since making his debut in September last year. FC Barcelona star striker, Samuel Eto’o Fils, who had earlier expressed his unwillingness to be part of the expedition, had a change of hearts and has made the trip to Japan. The squad arrived in Japan in two separate groups and will have just one training session before the match.

Meanwhile Japan coach, Ivica Osim, has called up just 12 players for the friendly against Cameroon. The Bosnian`s squad for the game does not include any strikers. The Japanese media called Osim`s latest squad selection a "new record" after he picked just 13 players for his first match in charge against Trinidad & Tobago last year. The 66-year-old is expected to add another five or six players to his party to face Cameroon although Japanese officials were left scratching their heads after the announcement.
